It is easy to draw some comparisons between Abbott and South African great Lance Klusener. Both hail from a similar region, and in his career Abbott has shown an ability to bowl with good pace and swing, as well as a knack for hitting the ball a long way.
An impressive first-class season in 2012-13 led to Abbott’s first international Test cap against Pakistan in early 2013. He made a memorable debut, taking 7-29, which remained the second-best performance by a South Africa bowler on debut.
In late 2016, Abbott signed a Kolpak deal with Hampshire after a lack of certainty over his place in the South African cricket set-up. Unfortunately, CSA were unable to convince Abbott to change his mind, which effectively ended his international career.
Throughout his career with the Proteas, Abbott represented his country in 11 Tests, 28 One-Day Internationals, and 21 Twenty20 Internationals. He claimed a notable 39 Test wickets, with a personal best of 7-29, along with 34 ODI and 26 T20I scalps.
