Mohammad Asghar Afghan began representing Afghanistan at the under-17 level in 2004, marking the start of his journey with the national team. His first senior international appearance followed later in the same year, as he participated in Afghanistan’s Asian Cricket Council Trophy match against Oman.
Five years after his junior debut, Afghan became a member of Afghanistan’s inaugural One Day International (ODI) team, which faced Scotland in 2009, solidifying his role in the senior setup.
As a batsman, Afghan has secured four half-centuries in 35 ODIs. Notably, he scored a pivotal 90* against Bangladesh in March 2014—an innings that propelled Afghanistan to its historic first victory over a Test-playing nation.
Although primarily a batsman, Afghan also contributes as a part-time medium-fast bowler, having claimed two wickets across his ODI career.
