Moeen Munir Ali appeared destined for the international stage from an early age, having represented England at the Under-19 level and for the England Lions before earning his maiden call-up to the senior side in 2014. His leadership qualities were evident early on, notably captaining the England Under-19 team to the semi-finals of the 2006 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Pakistan.

After beginning his professional journey with Warwickshire, Ali moved to Worcestershire in 2007, where he made an immediate impact by scoring 77 runs on debut. Sustained success in the domestic game paved the way for his international emergence, leading to his one-day international debut against the West Indies in February 2014, followed by his Test match debut against Sri Lanka in June of the same year.

Throughout his Test career, Ali has developed into a central figure for England, serving as their primary spin-bowling option. He has claimed more than 100 Test wickets, including a career-best performance of 6-53 against South Africa. A standout moment occurred in 2017 when he became the first player in 100 years to take a Test hat-trick at The Oval, a feat that secured victory against South Africa and handed England a 2-1 series lead. With the bat, he has recorded five Test centuries—including a career-high 155 not out against Sri Lanka in 2016—alongside two centuries in one-day international cricket.

Although Ali announced his retirement from Test and first-class cricket in 2021, he was recalled to the England squad on the eve of the 2023 Ashes series following an injury to frontline spinner Jack Leach.
