Although he may appear quiet and unassuming, Ravichandran Ashwin has established himself as one of the most damaging off-spinners in world cricket. His journey to international prominence gained rapid momentum following an impressive 2010 Indian Premier League season with the Chennai Super Kings. This standout campaign caught the attention of national selectors, leading to his One-Day International debut for India against Sri Lanka in June 2010.

Ashwin’s transition to the longest format of the game was equally seamless. He made his Test debut against the West Indies in 2011 and quickly cemented his position as India’s premier spinner across all three formats. Relying on an exceptional arsenal of off-spin and clever variations—most notably his signature carrom ball—he has consistently posed immense challenges for batters around the world.

Driven by extraordinary longevity and skill, Ashwin has steadily climbed the ranks of the all-time Test wicket-takers. In February 2024, he reached a monumental milestone by soaring past 500 Test wickets, firmly securing his position comfortably within the top 10 of all-time Test wicket-takers.

Beyond his lethal bowling, Ashwin is a fierce competitor who never backs down with the bat in hand. He has proven to be a highly capable option in the lower-middle order at number seven or eight, a capability highlighted by his six Test centuries.
