Scotland Men’s Cricket Team History

Cricket has long been a part of Scotland’s sporting landscape, with the Kelso Cricket Club, the nation’s oldest, established in 1821. Throughout history, the country has hosted legendary figures of the game, including W.G. Grace, Wilfred Rhodes, and Don Bradman, the latter of whom played his final innings on British soil in Aberdeen in 1948. Despite this heritage, it was not until the 1990s that a distinct Scottish national identity in cricket began to emerge, marked by the decision to move away from the English structure and the subsequent pursuit of ICC membership.

Scotland made an immediate impression on the international stage by qualifying for the 1999 ODI World Cup after finishing third at the 1997 ICC Trophy in Malaysia. Their debut official ODI took place against Australia during the 1999 tournament. As part of the competition, the Grange Club in Edinburgh hosted two matches, including a narrow 22-run loss for the Scots against Bangladesh. Following the tournament, the team faced a setback when standout player Gavin Hamilton was selected to represent England in Test cricket.

After failing to qualify for the 2003 World Cup, Scotland reasserted its regional strength by winning the inaugural ICC Intercontinental Cup in 2004 and securing the ICC Trophy in 2005 with a victory over Ireland. The squad—boasting talents such as Hamilton, Dougie Brown, John Blain, Craig Wright, and Majid Haq—entered the 2007 World Cup with high expectations, though they ultimately suffered three significant defeats.

Following appearances at the 2007 and 2009 World T20 tournaments, the team faced a six-year absence from global competition. They came agonizingly close to securing their first-ever World Cup victory at the 2015 ODI World Cup in a dramatic one-wicket loss to Afghanistan in Dunedin. The drought finally ended at the 2016 World T20, where Scotland achieved their first win at the 21st attempt by defeating Hong Kong. This momentum continued in subsequent years, highlighted by major upsets against Bangladesh in 2021 and the West Indies in 2022. Scotland also participated in the 2026 T20 World Cup, where they recorded a victory against Italy.
