The United States Of America has a long and storied cricket history, with the first documented international match taking place against Canada in 1844, a full 33 years before the first Test match between England and Australia. Over the years, the team continued to play bilateral cricket with their northern neighbors, but it wasn’t until 1979 that they participated in modern international cricket with the ICC Trophy.
In 2004, the team qualified for the Champions Trophy, where they suffered a 210-run defeat at the hands of New Zealand, highlighting the significant gap between Associate teams and Full Members. The team also participated in the T20 World Cup Qualifier in 2010, but failed to advance to the main event until 2024, with administrative issues plaguing the country’s cricket for decades. The USA cricket board was suspended by the ICC on multiple occasions due to concerns over governance and finance, with the most recent suspension occurring in 2017, when USACA was replaced by a new governing body, USA Cricket.
However, under the new administration, the team began to show significant improvement. In 2018, they defeated Singapore in the final of the World Cricket League Division Three and were promoted to Division Two for the first time. The following year, the ICC lifted the ban and granted the team Associate status, allowing them to play their first ODI since 2004. The team also achieved their first T20I victory in 2019, beating the Cayman Islands, and followed it up with a major milestone in 2021, defeating a Full Member team, Ireland, in Florida.
The team’s success continued in 2024, when they beat Bangladesh 2-1 in a T20I series in Dallas, marking their first series win over a Full Member team. The 2024 T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, was a memorable tournament for the team, as they beat Canada in the opening game, shocked Pakistan with a Super Over win, and advanced to the Super Eight. They also won two matches in the 2026 edition, although not against Full Member teams. The introduction of Major League Cricket, a franchise-based T20 competition, has also helped raise the profile of the game in the country.
Despite the progress made, the team has faced new challenges, including a suspension by the ICC in 2025 for violating the terms of ICC membership, including failure to implement a functional governance structure. Monank Patel and Pubudu Dassanayake have been notable figures in the team’s history, serving as captain and coach, respectively, and playing a crucial role in the team’s development under the USA Cricket board.
