A strategic shift in the batting order paid immediate dividends for Caleb Jewell, who produced his best performance of the season for Derbyshire. After struggling for rhythm at the top of the order—managing just 58 runs in his previous six innings—the left-hander was moved to No.4 for the match at Derby. The change provided the desired result as Jewell anchored the innings, striking eight boundaries to finish the day unbeaten on 91 as Derbyshire reached 3-342.

The foundations for the strong total were laid by Harry Came, who contributed 73, and Matthew Montgomery, who added 54. Northamptonshire’s Harry Conway was the pick of the bowlers among those who took wickets, claiming 1-77 on a productive day for the hosts.

Lehmann continues consistent run

Elsewhere, Hampshire’s Jake Lehmann maintained his impressive form in the first division. Despite being put in to bat by Essex at Chelmsford, Lehmann battled through a challenging session to score 89, marking his fifth consecutive half-century of the campaign. Lehmann’s effort, which spanned over three hours, was supported by a century stand with captain Ben Brown, who made 73. However, Lehmann expressed slight disappointment at failing to convert the knock into a triple-figure score. Essex reached 2-51 by the close of play.

Worrall strikes as Notts respond

At Trent Bridge, Dan Worrall made a successful return to the Surrey side following a calf injury that sidelined him for the start of the season. The bowler demonstrated his class by taking 5-61 from 20 overs. Despite his impact, Nottinghamshire fought back through a resilient unbeaten 129 from Joe Clarke, supported by Jack Haynes (82) and Australian allrounder Fergus O’Neill (31 not out), leaving the hosts at 7-317.

International returns and selection updates

Lancashire’s innings against Middlesex was a struggle, with the side bowled out for 201 at Old Trafford. Marcus Harris managed only five, though the team was bolstered by a valuable 35 from returning Australian allrounder Chris Green. James Anderson then applied pressure for Lancashire, taking two quick wickets to leave Middlesex at 2-38.

The round also marked the return of England’s leadership core as they prepare for upcoming Test matches against New Zealand. Ben Stokes showcased his form with the ball for Durham, taking 2-40 at Worcester, while Harry Brook stepped in for Joe Root at Yorkshire. Brook finished unbeaten on 29 as Yorkshire moved to 4-110 by stumps, following a strong bowling display that dismissed Warwickshire for 147.
