About Andrew Balbirnie

Andrew Balbirnie, a former captain of the Ireland Under-19 team, is a versatile cricketer whose international career began with his One-Day International debut against Scotland in July 2010. Following that initial breakthrough, he made four appearances in his debut year before a four-year hiatus from the format, returning to the international stage in September 2014.

The right-handed batsman became a central figure in Ireland’s preparations for the 2015 World Cup. During the latter half of 2014, he toured Australia and New Zealand for a series of warm-up matches and competed against New Zealand A in Dubai. His form during this period was prolific, highlighted by three half-centuries in Australia and New Zealand, followed by a standout score of 129 in Dubai, which solidified his position ahead of his World Cup debut in February 2015.

Beyond his primary role as a batsman, Balbirnie provides significant utility to the squad. He is capable of delivering handy off-spin and serves as a reliable back-up wicketkeeper for his side.
