The Punjab Kings experienced a promising beginning during the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League, yet the franchise has struggled to maintain consistent success due to a lack of a stable core. In October 2010, the IPL governing council moved to expel the franchise, alongside the Rajasthan Royals, citing alleged transgressions related to shareholding and ownership norms. Although the matter was resolved in court and the team was subsequently reinstated, the period of uncertainty severely disrupted the franchise’s preparations for the 2011 auction. With Michael Bevan appointed as head coach only four days before the event, the team entered the auction without retaining any players.
Following several years of mediocre performances, the franchise experienced a resurgence during the 2014 auction. Under the guidance of coach Sanjay Bangar, the team assembled a formidable squad that topped the league standings and reached the final, where they were narrowly defeated by the Kolkata Knight Riders. That same year, the team also reached the semi-finals of the Champions League T20. Despite this high point, the team struggled to sustain that momentum in the years that followed.
At the turn of the 2020s, the side was often regarded as one of the most dangerous due to their batting-heavy approach, yet they remained on the periphery of playoff contention. Leadership changes became frequent as the franchise sought to reverse its fortunes; Mayank Agarwal took the captaincy in 2022 but was replaced by Shikhar Dhawan in 2023. A significant structural change occurred in 2025, when the franchise appointed Ricky Ponting as coach and Shreyas Iyer as captain. This new leadership pairing successfully revitalized the squad, leading the team to its first IPL final appearance in 11 years.
