About Hashim Mohamed Amla

Consistency has defined the career of Hashim Mohamed Amla. The batsman made his Test debut in 2004, though he waited until March 2008 to earn his first one-day cap for the Proteas. Since that introduction to the limited-overs format, he has been a prolific run-scorer, becoming the fastest player to reach 3,000 ODI runs in 2012.

Amla’s 2012 campaign included a standout series against the West Indies, where he tallied 398 runs across five matches. He maintained this elite level of production into 2014, consistently ranking near the top of the international standings. During that year, he scored consecutive centuries against Sri Lanka in July and carried that momentum into a tri-series against Australia and Zimbabwe in August, highlighted by an unbeaten 122 against Zimbabwe on August 17. He later added another century during the November ODI series in Canberra.

His capability to dominate on the world stage was further evidenced during the 2015 ICC World Cup, where he recorded his career-high ODI score of 159 against Ireland.

Throughout his tenure with the national side, Amla has held various leadership roles. He was first appointed as the one-day vice-captain in 2011 before stepping down from the position in 2013. He returned to the role in June 2014, the same year he was appointed as the Test captain for the Proteas. Amla has remained a high-performing fixture for his country, maintaining a Test batting average of nearly 49 and an ODI average exceeding 50.
