Rahat Ali’s path to the ICC Cricket World Cup stage arrived through an unexpected opportunity when he was drafted into the Pakistan squad as a replacement for the injured Junaid Khan. At the time of his selection, his experience in one-day international cricket was limited to a single appearance against Sri Lanka in 2012, during which he recorded figures of 0-34. His call-up followed a successful run of form on the domestic circuit early in the year.

While his white-ball experience was in its infancy, Rahat Ali had established a more consistent presence in the Test arena. Since making his debut in 2013, he played 11 Test matches. His performance was particularly notable during the series against Australia and New Zealand held in Dubai late in the year, where he demonstrated his capability by securing two four-wicket hauls against the Black Caps.
