Sophie Molineux enjoyed an unrivalled junior career and was quickly pinpointed as the next big thing in Victorian (and Australian) cricket.
Having served as the under-18 Victorian captain, the talented top-order batter and left-arm spinner also spent time learning from Meg Lanning as a rookie in the Victorian squad.
In 2014, having just turned 16, Molineux was named Player of the Championships at the Under-18 Nationals. She was the highest run-scorer for Victoria with 155 runs and also claimed 19 wickets for the tournament, at an incredible average of just 3.9.
Molineux also flaunted her skills in the WBBL, performing well for Melbourne Renegades in the inaugural season of the tournament.
In 2018, she made her international debut and was an integral part of Australia’s success at the 2018 T20 World Cup.
Molineux then helped Australia to the 2020 T20 World Cup – and stole the show dancing with Katy Perry in front of 86,174 people at the MCG.
Her leadership qualities were recognised on the domestic front when she was named Melbourne Renegades and Victoria captain in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
Consecutive serious foot and knee injuries kept Molineux out of the Australian team for more than two years, but she fought her way back in and after impressing on the 2024 tour of Bangladesh, regained her contract.
After Molineux captained the Renegades to their first WBBL title in late 2024, another knee injury thwarted her hopes of playing in the Ashes in early 2025.
But her resilience again shone through as she fought her way back to regain her spot in the Australian team that travelled to the 2025 ODI World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
The respect in which Molineux is held by teammates and coaches alike was underscored when she was named captain of the Australia Test, ODI and T20I teams in January 2026, filling the shoes of retiring champion Alyssa Healy.
