Chennai Super Kings posted a formidable total of 6-207 at the Wankhede Stadium, powered by Samson’s majestic 101 not out off 54 deliveries. In response, a clinical bowling display led by West Indian spinner Akeal Hosein dismantled Mumbai’s batting lineup, rolling them over for just 104 runs in 19 overs to secure a comprehensive win in the marquee fixture.
Samson Anchors the Innings
Samson, who entered the match in splendid touch following high scores in the T20 World Cup and an unbeaten century against Delhi Capitals earlier this month, anchored the Chennai innings superbly. Opening the batting, he combined with partner Ruturaj Gaikwad, who made 22, and South African youngster Dewald Brevis, who contributed 21. After some middle-order hiccups, England’s Jamie Overton provided a late flourish, smashing 15 runs from just seven deliveries to push Chennai past the 200-run mark.
The centerpiece of the innings was undoubtedly Samson’s knock. The right-hander reached his hundred off the very last delivery of the 20 overs, driving his tenth boundary to go along with six towering sixes.
Following his match-winning performance, Samson highlighted the importance of playing an anchoring role. “It really feels great to score a century at the Wankhede against MI,” he said. “We were losing few wickets, so I thought it was important for a settled batter to stay and that’s what I tried and that’s what happened today. It is my responsibility to understand the game situation and what the team demands and plan around it.”
Hosein Tears Through Mumbai Top Order
Mumbai’s run chase was derailed almost immediately. Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein delivered a devastating opening spell, claiming two wickets in his first two overs. Fast bowler Mukesh Choudhary capitalised on the pressure, bowling Quinton de Kock for seven, which left the home side reeling at 3-11 during the Powerplay. Hosein finished with exceptional figures of 4-17, thoroughly exposing the Mumbai top order.
The slide continued as Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmad chipped in with two crucial wickets, while Overton completed a fine all-round game by picking up 1-14. Mumbai’s batting card made for grim reading, featuring three ducks. Danish Malewar and Sherfane Rutherford both fell to first-ball ducks, while Naman Dhir was dismissed without scoring after facing three balls. Senior batters Suryakumar Yadav (36) and Tilak Varma (37) offered the only resistance, being the sole players to cross into double figures. Gurjapneet Singh then wrapped up the contest by claiming the final wicket, sparking celebrations among the Chennai players.
Record-Breaking Defeat for Mumbai
The 103-run margin of defeat represents a historic low for the Mumbai franchise. It eclipsed their previous largest defeat by runs—an 87-run loss to Rajasthan Royals during the 2013 season when former Australian captain Ricky Ponting was leading the team. This defeat also marks the first time Mumbai has lost three consecutive home games at the Wankhede Stadium within a single IPL season.
