Kolkata Knight Riders Men’s Cricket Team History

The Kolkata Knight Riders experienced a challenging start during their first three years in the competition. Despite assembling a roster that featured international stars such as Ricky Ponting, Chris Gayle, and Shoaib Akhtar, alongside talented young Indian players like Ishant Sharma, the team struggled under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly and Brendon McCullum, failing to rise above a sixth-place finish.

A turning point arrived in 2011 when the franchise reached the playoffs for the first time under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir. With core contributors like Yusuf Pathan and Jacques Kallis leading the way, the team built significant momentum. This resurgence culminated in their first title victory in 2012, bolstered by the strategic acquisitions of Sunil Narine and Robin Uthappa. In 2014, the team secured their second championship, a campaign that marked the debut of Andre Russell in the squad.

Following their second title, the team maintained a competitive edge for three years, though they were unable to capture another trophy. Ahead of the 2018 auction, the franchise opted not to retain Gambhir. That year, under the new captaincy of Dinesh Karthik, the team secured a third-place finish. During the 2020 season, Karthik stepped down as captain, passing leadership duties to Eoin Morgan, who successfully guided the team to their third final appearance in 2021.

Following Morgan’s departure from the squad the following year, Shreyas Iyer took over the captaincy. His leadership proved instrumental in 2024, as he steered the franchise to their third title victory.
