The Lucknow Super Giants made their debut in the Indian Premier League in 2022, entering the competition alongside fellow newcomers Gujarat Titans. The franchise enjoyed a highly competitive start to their league history, successfully qualifying for the playoffs in each of their first two seasons. However, they were unable to advance further in either campaign. In their inaugural 2022 season, their journey ended in the eliminator match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and they faced a similar fate in 2023 when they were knocked out by Mumbai Indians.
During these early seasons, the team established a reputation for housing explosive batting talent, including the likes of Quinton de Kock, Nicholas Pooran, and Marcus Stoinis. Serving as the anchor for this aggressive lineup was captain KL Rahul. He finished as the franchise’s leading run-scorer in both 2022 and 2024, and was the second-highest scorer in 2023 despite missing a portion of the tournament due to an injury. While the squad possessed a formidable core of batters and allrounders, a lack of depth in experienced bowlers limited their success, leading to mediocre campaigns in both 2024 and 2025.
The franchise went through major structural changes starting in 2024, when they appointed former Australian international Justin Langer as their new head coach. Ahead of the 2025 season, the team parted ways with Rahul and made a massive statement in the player auction by acquiring Rishabh Pant for a record-breaking sum of Rs 27 crore, immediately naming him team captain. However, this leadership arrangement was short-lived, as Pant relinquished the captaincy ahead of the 2026 season.
