The Mumbai Indians franchise first established themselves as a competitive force in 2010 when they reached the final to finish as tournament runners-up. During the subsequent two years, the team significantly bolstered its core roster by acquiring key personnel, including Rohit Sharma, Zaheer Khan, and Kieron Pollard. The impact of these signings was immediate, with fast bowler Lasith Malinga securing the Purple Cap during the 2011 IPL season and subsequently earning the Player of the Series award during the 2011 Champions League T20, a tournament which Mumbai successfully won.

A transformative period began in 2013 when Rohit Sharma assumed the captaincy and Jasprit Bumrah made his debut for the franchise. The team demonstrated dominance at their home ground, the Wankhede Stadium, winning every match played there. After finishing level on points with the table-topping Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai defeated them in the final to claim their maiden IPL title, marking a fairy-tale conclusion to Sachin Tendulkar’s illustrious IPL career. Following a long tenure, Kieron Pollard retired from playing in 2022 and transitioned into the role of batting coach for the side.

The franchise has also benefited from the emergence of Suryakumar Yadav, who rose to prominence in the late 2010s and has remained a vital offensive force for the team. Alongside long-term pillars such as Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, these players have provided the stability that typically establishes Mumbai as a pre-tournament favourite. In 2024, Hardik Pandya took over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma in a challenging campaign that saw the team finish at the bottom of the table, though they demonstrated resilience by bouncing back to qualify for the playoffs the following year.
