Oman Men’s Cricket Team History

Cricket found its way to the Sultanate of Oman during the 1970s, introduced by expatriates from cricketing nations like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. From its earliest days, the sport benefited from royal patronage. For many decades, the game was played on rudimentary dusty grounds and concrete strips equipped with artificial turf. A significant development occurred in 2012 with the establishment of Oman’s first proper cricket venue, the scenic Al Amerat Cricket Stadium. This facility boasts two floodlit grounds, with its main ground notably hosting the opening match of the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Oman Cricket, the national governing body for the sport, was founded in 1979 and achieved Affiliate membership with the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2000. The team’s initial competitive appearances were in the 2002 Asian Cricket Council Trophy. Since then, Oman has been a regular participant in ACC tournaments, achieving a runner-up finish in 2004 and twice clinching the ACC T20 Cup title.

In 2014, Oman’s cricket status was elevated to that of an ICC Associate member. Over the subsequent years, the senior men’s team rapidly gained prominence. This ascent included qualifying for the 2016 T20 World Cup and securing official T20 International (T20I) status after triumphing over Namibia by five wickets in a Qualifier match held in Malahide. Their maiden T20I victory came shortly after, in November 2015, against Hong Kong in Abu Dhabi. During their debut at the 2016 T20 World Cup, Oman notably caused a stunning upset by defeating Ireland in their opening fixture.

Three years later, the team achieved another significant milestone by gaining One Day International (ODI) status for the first time, following a victory against Namibia in the World Cricket League Division Two. Their first ODI win against a Full Member nation was recorded in 2023, once again against Ireland, during a World Cup Qualifier. After missing the 2022 T20 World Cup, Oman participated in two subsequent editions of the tournament, though they were unable to secure a victory in either.
