Sunrisers Hyderabad Men’s Cricket Team History

Sunrisers Hyderabad was formed following the dissolution of the Deccan Chargers, inheriting a squad that included 20 retained players and captain Kumar Sangakkara. During their formative years, the team struggled to establish a consistent core, experimenting with four different leaders in their first two seasons: Sangakkara, Cameron White, Daren Sammy, and Shikhar Dhawan. Although the side demonstrated strength in their bowling attack, they initially found it difficult to settle on a balanced playing XI.

The franchise began to define its unique identity in 2015 when David Warner was appointed as captain. While the team finished sixth that season, Warner’s individual consistency secured his position as a long-term leader. Under his stewardship, and supported by a coaching setup featuring head coach Tom Moody, mentor VVS Laxman, and bowling coach Muthiah Muralidaran, the team reached its peak. This leadership group fostered a highly effective environment, culminating in the Sunrisers’ maiden IPL title in 2016, a period during which spin sensation Rashid Khan also established himself as a cornerstone of the side.

A period of transition began in 2020 when Trevor Bayliss succeeded Tom Moody as head coach. Following a disappointing 2021 campaign, which saw Warner dropped from the team and Kane Williamson elevated to the captaincy, the franchise parted ways with both Warner and Rashid Khan. This move marked a significant shift in the team’s composition. Tom Moody returned to the director of cricket role before briefly resuming head coaching duties in 2022, only to be succeeded by Brian Lara. By 2024, the team underwent further structural changes, appointing Daniel Vettori as head coach and Pat Cummins as captain, with the latter leading the team to a final appearance that same year.
