Finn Allen’s explosive performance at the Arun Jaitley Stadium proved the highlight of the latest Indian Premier League action, as his unbeaten 100 off 47 balls guided the Kolkata Knight Riders to a fourth consecutive victory. Chasing a target of 143, Kolkata cruised to the win largely due to a brilliant third-wicket partnership between Allen and Cameron Green.

Green facilitates the chase

The duo shared an unbroken 116-run stand, with Green opting for a supportive role. As the target approached, Green tracked the required runs to ensure Allen could reach his maiden IPL century. “I did the math when I knew we had about 29 to get,” said Green. “I knew I’d be the most hated man in Calcutta if I did anything else but that.”

Green’s selflessness culminated in the final over. With the milestone in sight, Green took a single to provide Allen with the strike. Allen capitalized by clubbing a maximum over midwicket off Mukesh Kumar, securing both the victory and his first IPL hundred. Allen finished with 10 sixes in his innings, while Green contributed a measured 33 off 27 deliveries.

A resurgence for Kolkata

This result continues a remarkable turnaround for the Kolkata Knight Riders, who began their season with a series of poor performances before finding their rhythm with this current winning streak. For Allen, the innings marked a significant redemption. The 27-year-old Aucklander had struggled earlier in the campaign, managing only 81 runs in his first five innings before being dropped.

“Sometimes, it changes your perspective,” Allen said regarding his return to the side. “You go out of the team and have a bit of time for a mental refresh. I’d been putting too much pressure on myself at the start, so it was good to sit back and refresh.” His approach against the Delhi attack showed improved maturity; he reached his half-century in 32 deliveries before accelerating rapidly to finish his century in just 15 more balls.

Delhi’s tactical struggle

Earlier in the match, Delhi Capitals struggled after being sent in to bat, managing only 89 runs for the loss of five wickets by the 11th over. Cameron Green contributed to the pressure, dismissing Nitish Rana during his single over of the match. Kolkata’s spin duo, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, dominated the middle overs, conceding just 45 runs across their combined eight-over spell to restrict the opposition total.

Mitchell Starc, representing Delhi, faced a challenging outing against his former franchise, finishing with figures of 0-31 from three overs. As the season progresses, the shift in form for both Allen and the wider Kolkata squad places them in a strong position, while the recent results have intensified the competition across the league standings. The integration of high-value international players, including the likes of Pat Cummins, Travis Head, and Josh Hazlewood across various teams, continues to influence the tactical landscape of this year’s tournament.
