At 17, he made his state debut, captained Australia to an Under-19 World Cup victory at 18, and received an international call-up by 19.

In 2014, Marsh forwent lucrative Indian Premier League contracts to represent Australia A, delivering a standout double-century against India A.

The right-hander later earned his Test debut against Pakistan in Dubai that year, though his red-ball career fluctuated until he shone in Ashes clashes against England. Notable performances include two centuries during the 2017-18 series and 5-46 at The Oval in 2019.

A defining moment came mid-2023 when Marsh returned to Test cricket with a 119 at Headingley following a near-four-year absence.

Heralding a resurgence, he claimed victory in the ODI World Cup and earned his first Allan Border Medal during a dominant home summer against Pakistan and West Indies.

Mitchell solidified his role as a white-ball linchpin. At the 2021 T20 World Cup, he scored a pivotal 50 in Australia’s final group game against the West Indies and smashed 77 not out off 50 balls in the final to lead the team to their maiden T20 title.

He made history in 2023 by captaining Australia’s T20I side in South Africa, including leading during Pat Cummins’ absence, and was appointed permanent T20 captain in May 2024 ahead of the subsequent T20 World Cup.
